Saint Teresa of the Andes

A great resource for middle school-high school ages!
The Writings of St. Teresa of Jesus of the Andes Saint Teresa of Jesus of the Andes (Juanita Fernandez Solar) left behind her diary and one hundred and sixty four letters to her family and friends when she passed away at age nineteen. The Writings of Saint Teresa of Jesus of the Andes, a Carmelite nun, is an abridgement of her writings and contain excerpts of her best entries. There is also a short biography written by her brother, Luis, that was used in her canonization cause. These writings tell of Teresa's intense love of God and guide us on our our own spiritual journey.

St. Teresa of the Andes is a popular saint for women and adolescents. In many ways, she led a normal teenage life for her time. She loved to read about saints, especially St. Therese de Lisieux.  Read about her young life on the Vatican's website.
  • The holiness of her life shone out in the everyday occurrences, wherever she found herself: at home, in college, with friends, the people she stayed with on holidays. To all, with apostolic zeal, she spoke of God and gave assistance. She was young like her friends, but they knew she was different. They took her as a model, seeking her support and advice. All the pains that are part of living, Juanita felt keenly, and the happiness she enjoyed deeply, all in God.

To learn more about St. Teresa, watch this reflective video.

How Does the Catholic Church Declare Someone a Saint? Have you ever wondered about the steps to canonization — that is, being named a saint by the Catholic Church? Who is eligible? What happens on the way to being named a saint? Aren’t there miracles involved? We answer all those questions and more in this saint-filled video. One of the interesting things about the saints is that many of them were imperfect people. They sinned. They experienced doubt. For many saints, the turnaround in their lives was gradual — it did not necessarily come in one big moment of clarity. (Busted Halo)

Want to Raise Little Saints? Tell the Saints' Stories When I was a child, we had a beautiful, leather bound compilation of saints on our bookshelf, complete with illustrated pictures of haloed figures in robes, some with wounds, all with serious and stoic expressions on their faces. I was enthralled by them. I was in awe of them. But I didn’t ever relate to them. (Busted Halo)

Sister Maria Caeli on the Saints (Video) Watch Sister Maria Caeli from Our Lady, Star of the Sea Parish and School in Bremerton, with a quick tip on how the saints can help YOU become a saint.
The SaintCast - Catholic Saints on Call A light-hearted Catholic podcast of all things Saint-like. Learn more about a variety of saints, including Fr. Damien of Molokai, St. Maximilian Kolbe, Margaret Marie Alacoque and much more!

Do Catholics Worship Saints? Listen to Fr. Mike Schmidtz talk about saints and how they help us.

Friends, Not Statues: Three Ways to Teach About the Saints There are many ways we can teach about the saints. When we talk about our friends, we don’t say what day their birthday falls on or when they were married; rather, we tell stories about them. We talk about adventures we’ve had together, or share insights we have received from the deep conversations we’ve had. Suppose we do the same thing when we talk about the saints with the young people in our faith formation classes?

6 Saints for Black History Month There are dozens of African saints, but one of these 6 is likely to be the first  canonized African American.

On the Road to Sainthood: Leaders of African Descent
...the communion of saints goes beyond earthly life, beyond death and endures forever. This union among us goes beyond and continues in the next life; it is a spiritual communion born in Baptism and not broken by death, but, thanks to the Risen Christ, is destined to find its fullness in eternal life." — Pope Francis, General Audience, October 30, 2013.

TASK 5 – EDUCATION FOR COMMUNITY LIFE – Students study and participate in the life and mission of the Church—the Body of Christ and the community of believers—as expressed in the Church’s origin, history, ecclesiology, the Communion of Saints, and their family, the Domestic Church.

The Essential Concepts come from the Table of Contents for the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC). They have been re-organized to fit under the Six Tasks of Catechesis. CCC articles numbers associated with each Essential Concept are listed throughout this document. Referencing CCC article numbers is a recommended resource for catechist preparation.
