The Consistent Ethic of Life, Love of Neighbor,
The Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy

Catholic Social Teaching 101 Video Lessons from CRS-CST 101 is a collaborative 7-part video and discussion guide series presented by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and Catholic Relief Services on Catholic social teaching. The videos bring the themes of Catholic social teaching to life and inspire us to put our faith into action. The series also includes downloadable posters and handouts for adults and kids, in English and Spanish. The images featured in the videos and accompanying discussion guides and posters are courtesy of Br. Mickey McGrath, OSFS.

The Seven Principles of Catholic Social Teaching The Catholic Church has a wide-ranging and many-layered collection of teachings about social justice issues. In order to help organize these ideas within the many Church documents about social teaching, we have seven traditional principles that help introduce the major themes in easier-to-understand concepts. A look briefly at each principle, or theme, in order to introduce you to the foundational ideas at the heart of Catholic Social Teaching.

Laudato Si-On Care for Our Common Home  Laudato Si’ is a passionate call to all people of the world to take “swift and unified global action”, particularly in relation to the destruction of the environment. Pope Francis writes that while humanity has made incredible progress in science and technology, this has not been matched with moral, ethical and spiritual growth. This imbalance is causing our relationships with creation and with God to break down and our hearts to become hardened to the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor.

Catholic Social Teaching Resources from the USCCB Catholic social teaching is a central and essential element of our faith. Its roots are in the Hebrew prophets who announced God's special love for the poor and called God's people to a covenant of love and justice. It is a teaching founded on the life and words of Jesus Christ, who came "to bring glad tidings to the poor . . . liberty to captives . . . recovery of sight to the blind"(Lk 4:18-19), and who identified himself with "the least of these," the hungry and the stranger (cf. Mt 25:45). Catholic social teaching is built on a commitment to the poor. This commitment arises from our experiences of Christ in the Eucharist.

TASK 3 – MORAL FORMATION– Students develop a moral conscience that is informed by Church teachings and conformed to Christ, as modeled in a personal life of virtue, and demonstrated in service of the Gospel's demands for society.

The Essential Concepts come from the Table of Contents for the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC). They have been re-organized to fit under the Six Tasks of Catechesis. CCC articles numbers associated with each Essential Concept are listed throughout this document. Referencing CCC article numbers is a recommended resource for catechist preparation.
