Call to Prayer & Importance of Prayer

CATHOLIC PRAYER BOOK FOR CHILDREN

Printed versions in three languages (English, Spanish, and Vietnamese) are also available. Please see below for ordering instructions.

Catholic Prayers for our Children is a tool for parents/legal guardians and teachers to teach the essential prayers of the Catholic faith and a means to keep both a record of their children's faith and record of their children's progress in learning to pray. 13 Tips for Praying the Rosary with Kids

The rosary is supposed to be a form of meditative prayer.
Listen to the words of Pope Paul VI: “Without contemplation, the Rosary is a body without a soul, and its recitation runs the risk of becoming a mechanical repetition of formulas. . . . By its nature the recitation of the Rosary calls for a quiet rhythm and a lingering pace, helping the individual to meditate on the mysteries of the Lord’s life as seen through the eyes of her who was closest to the Lord” (Marialis Cultus #47). Realizing that the rosary is primarily a form of meditative prayer opens up whole new horizons for teens . . . and adults.
The rosary can be adapted to kids. Mary is many things, but she is first and foremost a mom . . . a mom who undoubtedly understands what it is like to deal with kids! (Yeah, Jesus might have been a good kid, but she undoubtedly mothered the children of relatives and neighbors, too.) So why do we feel enslaved to saying the entire rosary with small kids? Realizing that we could do a mini-rosary with the littles made saying the rosary as a family do-able.

Catholic Q & A: The Practical Mechanics of Prayer  (Fr. Rick Poblocki, The Stations of the Cross Catholic Radio Network)
How to Pray Lectio Divina? Pope Francis Will Teach You, Step by Step "Lectio Divina” means divine reading in Latin. It’s an ancient practice that teaches us how to read, meditate on and live the Word of God. (CatholicLink)

Teaching Your Child to Pray It is important for every child to learn how to pray. Even though you may not think you are qualified to be an authority, as parent or guardian, you are your child's primary teacher! Children mainly learn to pray by watching and copying their parents, siblings, relatives, others in church and elsewhere. (Growing Up Catholic)

How to Create a Tool Kit for All Your Prayer Needs Are there ever times when you sit down to pray and don't know how to get started? The reality is that different situations might call for different types of prayer.  (Busted Halo)

Beyond Memorizing Words to Meditating with Traditional Prayers Here’s an example, using the Hail Mary, of how we might use a traditional prayer as a guided reflection for our classes (and in our own prayer lives as well).
Relaxing Prayer All prayer is a conversation with God. In fact, it’s part of a friendship with God, as Ignatian spirituality tells us. So if we can relax with a friend at a coffee shop, a lunch table, a fun event, or in a living room, why can’t we relax with our friend God in prayer, wherever we are?

Teaching Kids to Pray Adult Faith Formation Director Laura Broyles presents a talk to parents on how to teach children to pray. Very thorough video presentation on the aspects of prayer and how families can celebrate the faith in the home along with ideas on incorporating prayer in each day.

Can You Relate? Helping teens and tweens to love prayerwww.catechist.com/can-you-relate-helping-teens-and-tweens-to-love-prayer/ It can be awkward inviting young people to pray, especially if they have a poorly informed notion of what prayer is and what it can do for them. Yet most of them want to know who they are as individuals, why they exist, and where they are going, so it’s our job to show them that the surest pathway to clarity, direction, and joy is prayer.
Learning to Pray A variety of activity sheets, exercises, videos and articles geared toward junior high and high school students regarding all aspects of prayer. (St. Mary's Press)
Sign of the Cross Lesson Plan your students will understand the meaning of the Sign of the Cross. When they make the Sign of the Cross, they will remember the sacrifice Jesus made for them and affirm their belief in the Holy Trinity. (The Religion Teacher)
Help for Bedtime Prayer Right before bed is often a good time to have a short family prayer service. Or, you can have your children pray a short prayer in (or kneeling next to) their beds. Older kids and teens may prefer to pray some of the evening prayers from the Liturgy of Hours.

Class Prayer Resources Religion teachers and catechists are different from all other teachers because they have the opportunity to pray in class with their students. There are a variety of options that teachers have to choose from when selecting class prayers. The resources below are meant to assist teachers in selecting the best prayers for their classrooms.

The Lord’s Prayer Lesson Plan Use this lesson plan to teach about the meaning of each part of the Lord’s Prayer (the Our Father). Students will learn the meaning of the prayer and apply it to their lives so that praying it becomes more meaningful and not mindless and memorized.

USCCB - Prayer God invites us into a relationship with Him that is both personal and communal. He speaks to us through His Son, Jesus Christ, the Word-made-flesh. Prayer is our response to God who is already speaking or, better yet, revealing Himself to us. Therefore, prayer is not merely an exchange of words, but it engages the whole person in a relationship with God the Father, through the Son, and in the Holy Spirit.
USCCB - Popular Devotional Practices: Basic Questions and Answers Referring to the many forms of popular piety found in America, Pope John Paul II declared, "These and other forms of popular piety are an opportunity for the faithful to encounter the living Christ." 9

USCCB - Prayers and Devotions Various forms of prayer are presented in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 2623-2649). These various forms include prayer of blessing or adoration, prayer of petition, prayer of intercession, prayer of thanksgiving, and prayer of praise.

TASK 4–TEACHING PRAYER –  Engage in Catholic expressions of prayer to foster  the contemplative dimension of Christian experience.

The Essential Concepts come from the Table of Contents for the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC). They have been re-organized to fit under the Six Tasks of Catechesis. CCC articles numbers associated with each Essential Concept are listed throughout this document. Referencing CCC article numbers is a recommended resource for catechist preparation.
