First Penance Prep Tips: Adaptations for Children with Special Needs - The sacrament of Penance can be difficult for some people with special needs. This sacrament may pose a challenge for those with intellectual disabilities, limited language skills, or difficulty distinguishing right actions from wrong actions. For instance, many individuals with autism, Down syndrome, and other cognitive disabilities, have trouble expressing and understanding emotions such as remorse and contrition. Additionally, it can present access issues for people with hearing impairments and physical disabilities. When the proper supports are put into place, individuals with special needs can achieve success in receiving this important sacrament. Visit the Adaptive Catechesis page for more resources.

USCCB-Penance Religion teachers and catechists are different from all other teachers because they have the opportunity to pray in class with their students. There are a variety of options that teachers have to choose from when selecting class prayers. The resources below are meant to assist teachers in selecting the best prayers for their classrooms.

USCCB - What Must I Do? The Sacrament of Reconciliation and Young Adults "When teenagers participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, they come face to face with the mystery of God’s love. This sacrament helps them experience God’s forgiveness firsthand."

TASK 2-INITIATING INTO THE CELEBRATION OF THE MYSTERY - Recognize and experience the presence of Christ and enter into communion with Him through active, full, and conscious participation in the Church's liturgical celebrations and sacraments.

The Essential Concepts come from the Table of Contents for the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC). They have been re-organized to fit under the Six Tasks of Catechesis. CCC articles numbers associated with each Essential Concept are listed throughout this document. Referencing CCC article numbers is a recommended resource for catechist preparation.
