CREED
The Profession of Faith

Catholic 101: What is the Creed? What exactly is the Creed? Where did it come from? What are we saying when we recite it? The truth is, the Creed is a huge topic, and many lines in the Creed were the product of tremendous debate and contention. You could take a whole graduate-level class on the contents of the Creed!

Walking through the Nicene Creed Let’s take a quick walk through the Creed and try to understand it a bit more in depth. Of course, each word in the phrase is packed with meaning and endless depth. Truly, the reality of our Faith is that we are diving into the mysteries of an infinite God. So, there is always more to learn.

Take a Quiz on the Creed While the danger of the creed becoming just some formula that we repeat mechanically is real in any age, the more we learn about its history and the truths that it tries to express, the more it will become something alive that teaches us a lot about what it means to be Christian. Take this quiz to see what you know and what more you can learn about the Creed.

Five Steps to Growing in Your Understanding of the Nicene Creed We utter the words every time we go to Mass, but when was the last time that you took a moment to reflect on what you are truly saying when we pray The Nicene Creed? (Catholic-Link, Becky Roach)
Do You Sound like a Robot When You Say the Creed? It is very easy, with prayers we know well and say often, to become the ‘robots’, to just say or read the words but not think about them. How often do we recite the Creed without thinking about it? (Use with Robot video above). (Catholic Link-Alex Farmer)
Three Ways to Teach the Creed to Younger Children How can we teach the Creed to children in a meaningful way? Here are three ways. Discover, Illustrate, Review.
Taking to Heart the Apostles’ Creed Teaching young children to memorize a prayer involves some traditional and non-traditional methods. Here is a lesson idea that uses different ways for children to learn.

Consubstantial: What Does That Mean? By asking us to now use the word consubstantial when we pray the Creed (remember, the Creed is a statement of what we believe as Catholics) the Church is reminding us of the importance of professing that the Father and the Son are the exact same substance. (Lifeteen-Mark Hart)
Why Do Catholics Pray the Creed? The Creed is a summary of the Christian faith and expresses the central truths that the members of the Catholic Church believe. The YouCat describes a creed as a ‘brief formula of faith that makes it possible for all believers to make a common profession’ (YouCat 26). (Lifeteen)

USCCB-What We Believe "Our profession of faith begins with God, for God is the First and the Last, the beginning and the end of everything. The Credo begins with God the Father, for the Father is the first divine person of the Most Holy Trinity; our Creed begins with the creation of heaven and earth, for creation is the beginning and the foundation of all God's works."---the Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 198

TASK 1 – KNOWLEDGE OF THE FAITH – Students explore, profess, and reflect on our Catholic faith, which is the content of God's revelation found in Sacred Scripture and Sacred tradition and lived out in the Creed and Church doctrine.

The Essential Concepts come from the Table of Contents for the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC). They have been re-organized to fit under the Six Tasks of Catechesis. CCC articles numbers associated with each Essential Concept are listed throughout this document. Referencing CCC article numbers is a recommended resource for catechist preparation.
